Weaver turbines use Active Furling; a combination of aerodynamics, control logic, and active response that allows your turbine to detect and actively respond to adverse conditions.


Active Furling is Simple, Safe and Reliable

This revolutionary control method increases the longevity of the machine and distinguishes Weaver Turbines from all other small-scale wind turbines.

If high winds or adverse conditions are detected or predicted, our turbine's automated control mechanism quickly furls (pivots, folds) the tail, bringing the rotor into its 'safety position', protecting the machine from overspeed and potential damage. When sensors confirm that conditions are safe again, the tail returns to its straight-back position and the turbine resumes normal operation.

Weaver Innovation at Work

In this slow motion video, the camera points directly into the wind at all times. The tail furls in response to controller software detecting high winds, high rpm, etc.  The force of the wind on the furled tail realigns the tail with the wind causing the rotor to turn away from the wind – slowing it – ensuring turbine safety. This is analogous to how a sailboat's direction and speed is controlled – a rudder turns the vessel into the wind, slowing the boat by spilling excess wind from the sail.

We design our turbines to last at least 20 years with minimal maintenance.  To achieve this we focus on durable design, use the highest quality materials available and select only heavy duty components.

Design

Our machines are designed, engineered, and built at our facility in Freeville, New York. Because we maintain contact with our machines from concept to production, we can ensure a high-quality, durable end product. 

 


Materials

We use 6061 aircraft grade aluminum stock for our turbine frame; taking corrosion out of the picture and making our turbines light and strong.

Key Components

We source our generators from French company Alxion because of their reputation for quality in the industry. Working with their frameless generators also allows us to design our own long lasting housing and bearings to our own specifications.

Through our experience we choose to use a heavy duty slewing drive motor to power the turbine tail. This unit is screw driven and it's holding power and fractional control is ideal for our Active Furling purposes and long lasting durability.

The value of carbon fiber blades is in durability and the ability to quickly respond to changing conditions, picking up RPMs efficiently and coming to a safe stop quickly. The leading edge of our blades are reenforced with steel tape which helps to minimize pitting that can cause to an increase in rotor noise over time.
